The team at Case Western Reserve University, The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH), Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC have been awarded an NIH grant titled “RESTORES” to study multi-functional devices in people with spinal cord injury.
For the quadriplegic SCI population, function in hand grasp, trunk stability, and continence are among highest priorities. Although implanted and non-implanted solutions have existed for each of these function, it has never been practical to coordinate multiple independent prosthetic systems in one person, so recipients have had to choose a single restored function.
This Blueprint Medtech UG3/UH3 will be planning a modified COSMIIC System capable of supporting hand grasp function, trunk stability, and bladder control all in the same patient. The team will modify the device, seek an FDA IDE, and if approved, will begin a study with 4 implant recipients. It’s a direct test of what modularity and extensibility are supposed to make possible.
